Supervision for Solo Coaches Who Can’t Afford a Fancy Program

You cannot see your own dual roles. Burnout will lie to you. A VA cannot sit in this chair. Progress notes are not supervision. Neither is a niche page. This is a peer triad: monthly, 60 minutes, names off. If the case is dual, bring your behavior, not their biography.

The Triad

Three coaches. Monthly. 20 minutes each. Rotate: one brings a case, two ask clean questions, nobody gives a TED talk.

Rules: names off, no diagnosing the client, you leave with one experiment for you (what you will do differently).

If you cannot find two peers, you cannot afford not to. Ask in a community you already trust. Pay for a supervisor if the triad goes soft.

The 60-Minute Agenda

• 0–5: contract (“we are here for our behavior”)
• 5–25: case 1
• 25–45: case 2
• 45–55: case 3
• 55–60: each person says their one experiment

Cut anyone who starts treating the absent client. That’s the whole skill.

What to Bring

“I keep staying past scope when the invoice is big.” “I didn’t interrupt the overtalker.” “I enrolled a follower I cannot refuse in public.”

Not: a 12-minute story of their childhood. You are the case.

What Most Coaches Get Wrong

They use group chat and call it supervision. Chat is gossip with a halo.

They also bring the client’s drama because it’s interesting. Interesting is a leak.

They skip a month when they’re ashamed. That’s the month they needed.

A Case Card (bring this)

• The behavior I keep repeating
• When it showed up last
• What I did in the room
• What I want to try next
• What I am tempted to make about the client

Four minutes to fill. If the card is a novel, you are bringing their biography. Cut until you are the subject.

Pay each other in attention, not invoices, unless you agree to pay. If the triad goes polite for two months, hire a supervisor for a quarter. Polite is the failure mode, not the fee.

How to Find Two Peers Without a Fancy Org

Ask three coaches whose work you respect: “Monthly 60, names off, we are the case. Yes or no.” You need two yeses. If everyone you ask is a client or a follower, you don’t have peers yet. That’s a dual-role problem, not a scheduling problem.

Meet on a boring video link. No slides. No recording unless all three agree. Delete chat after.

If one member keeps bringing gossip, the other two stop. A triad that won’t cut is a group chat. End it and start again with people who like the clock.

Bring money shame. Bring the client you over-enrolled. Bring the text you answered at 10pm. If the triad only hears polished cases, it is a performance review. Supervision that cannot hold your worst hour cannot protect the next one.

End on the experiment for you. “Next time I will cut at two minutes.” Then do it. Report back. That loop is the whole program.

If you miss a month, the next one starts with why. Missed supervision is usually the same behavior you bring as a case. Treat the miss as data. Do not restart with a polished story so the triad likes you. The triad is not an audience. If you catch yourself performing, say so and start the case over in one sentence. That honesty is the hour. Keep a shared note of experiments-for-you. Review last month’s before you bring a new case. Supervision without a loop is coffee. Coffee is fine. It is not a practice. End the year with twelve dated experiments-for-you. If you cannot list them, you had community, not supervision. Community is allowed. Do not confuse the two.

When DIY Isn’t Enough

A paid supervisor is the upgrade when the triad gets polite. Polite is how scope dies. Until then, the triad is enough if you hold the agenda. We will not invent a Supervision plan. Launch / Grow / Scale still exist for delivery machines, not for your peer hour.
